Containers For Flower Arrangements
Japanese Flower and Plant Arrangements (Antique)
I can't read Japanese. Perhaps someone can translate this for me. But this is such a great collectible, a real keeper, and I've never seen a book like it. The arrangements are art, and obviously involve culture, nature, form, statement, and design. The book reads back to front. All text is in Japanese. There are hundreds of photos in either a green, blue or tan tint of unusual and beautiful flower arrangements, with accompanying stands, pots, containers, trays, baskets and decorative items. There are also separate photos of women in traditional dress, and many quaint drawings of twig and flower arrangement shapes. The flower and twig arrangements are quite unusual and beautiful. Some of these drawings appear to be ads. The fount of collector detail is amazing. I think this must date from the 1930's, but could be earlier. Great deal, recommended.
Nara - Gion: Gion Corner - Sagagoryu Seika Style
Kado (??), literally the "way of flowers", is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as ikebana (???), literally "living flowers." More than simply putting flowers in a container, kado is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of particolored or multicolored arrangement of blooms, ikebana often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line, form.
The Japanese art of flower arrangement can be traced back to the 6th century when Buddhism was introduced to Japan, evolving from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers at the altar to the spirits of the dead. The first classical styles of arrangement started in the middle of the fifteenth century with Buddhist priests and members. As time passed, other schools emerged, styles changed, and it became a custom among the Japanese society.
Gion Corner was established at Yasaka Kaikan Hall in 1962. Its one-hour show is popular with international tourists for its quick introduction to seven different traditional art forms: flower delivery wales, kado (flower arrangement), houston flower market, gagaku (ancient court music), kyogen (traditionally comic drama), kyomai (Kyoto style geisha/maiko dance) geisha-style women dances, and bunraku puppet drama. On the first floor, there is a Maiko Gallery exhibiting interesting items associated with maiko.
Sacred Heart Arrangement
This was a requested arrangement that Angela did for an elderly lady's birthday. Flowers include Liatris, Asiatic Lily, carnations, daisy poms trecilium and bupleurum with leather leaf. The statue is fixed onto an old Teleflora platform that comes in many of their container specials, and was alter to fit the base with rubber bands.

In this strikingly beautiful and revolutionary work, Kawase has taken a fresh approach to flower arranging, demonstrating through breathtaking color photographs his universally appealing style of bringing nature indoors.
Often misunderstood as a static art form, its rules frozen by generations of teachers, Japanese flower arranging should in fact be a dynamic relationship between man and nature, with every arrangement holding within it infinite possibilities of form and statement.
While based on a thorough knowledge of traditional techniques, Kawase's designs are liberated by his personal response to the natural environment. The arranger, in his view, is an artist, not tied down by the received way of doing things, but free to express himself. The object, ideally, is to create a form of a floral poetry.
Hence the word "inspired" in the title: his aim being to inspire, to suggest new ways of designing with flowers. At the same time, though, he provides practical tips for beginners; explains the importance of using the right containers, and shares his own thoughts on what makes a particular arrangement eye-catching or graceful.
Here, in a new, slightly smaller format than before is one of the most unusual and beautiful books of its kind ever published.
